Nonprofit Credit Counseling Service

There are a variety of nonprofit credit counseling services available, and a huge number of for profit agencies as well. Groups like Credability.org are freely available and have a great track record. They are a nonprofit credit counseling service that doesn’t charge anything for their help in building a debt repayment plan.
Many organizations have fees associated with debt repayment plans, even taking a portion of the money you pay them to be used on your debts for their own fees.
By choosing a nonprofit credit counseling service you can usually assume that they won’t be charging you exorbitant fees for their services, but it’s a good idea to ask just to be safe. While some groups, like Credability, offer their services to their clients free of charge, some nonprofit credit counseling services still charge fees.
Seeking reviews online is a good way to help filter out the good organizations from the bad. If you know anybody who has worked with a credit counseling service in the past, ask them their experience. If they have had a good one, it is worth checking out who they worked with. Especially if their debt repayment plan worked for them.

The best way to choose a credit counseling service, though, is simply to call and ask them questions about what they can do to help you. If they are friendly and supportive initially, you can usually expect them to be for the duration of your working relationship.

CredAbility says that the consumers on its Debt Management Plans in 2010 had higher incomes, more credit card debt and were older than in previous years.
In 2010, the average income of a person on a DMP with CredAbility was $53,880, a four percent increase compared to 2009. Each person on a DMP in 2010 had an average of $24,266 in credit card debt, a 4.5 percent increase compared to 2009. The average age of a person on DMP in 2010 was 48, up from 45 years old in 2009.
“While people enrolling in our DMPs earn good incomes, they have an increasing amount of credit card debt,” Williams said. “We can help them negotiate lower interest rates with their creditors that may result in lower monthly payments.”
Many people who opt for a DMP to repay their unsecured debt are prompted to seek help after late payments have caused their credit card interest rates to soar. In some cases, a DMP is a sound alternative to bankruptcy. Ultimately, the plan serves the dual purpose of helping consumers repay their debts and helping creditors receive the money owed to them.
